Oh Boy

hikarugenki.JPGI don’t even know where to begin. Maybe by stating that I’m trying hard to make this post as unoffensive as possible, because honestly, it is not my intention to offend anyone or to sound patronizing or condescending. Seeing, however, how the things I write sometimes are utterly misperceived maybe it’s not the worst idea to put a few things straight, because I think it might actually enhance your reading experience. And that’s, after all, one of my biggest motivations to write. To have people enjoy what they read, but that’s impossible to achieve if they don’t get what I mean, or if they get it the wrong way.

Okay, so here goes..

A friend of mine is a teacher in Junior High School and High School (which in my country is the same thing). He’s a great guy, we go way back, we’ve travelled the world together, and he’s got a great sense of humour. There are times when we spend hours together laughing our asses off because we tell each other funny things, come up with hilarious puns or just point out the humour that’s inherent in our everyday lives to each other.

So anyway, what he’s telling me from his experience as a teacher of 10- to 19-year-olds is that the concepts of irony and sarcasm are completely lost on young people. And I tend to agree with him. Okay, it may be a bit of an exaggeration. My niece is 14, and she does get my jokes sometimes. Sometimes, however, she doesn’t. And I don’t blame her. She’s young and innocent, just like I was at that age, and there are numerous things that today I think are hilariously funny but that were completely lost on me 20 years ago.

My point is, when I write something like “just because I love ballads doesn’t mean I’m gay” it doesn’t mean I’m not gay. Of course I am, and I’ve mentioned it before even though it’s nobody’s business. Then again it’s not some kind of disease either, so there’s no reason not to mention or even make fun of it. Because having your head up your ass about something is totally boring, even if you’re gay and you usually like having things up your ass (← and that, btw, was an example of my extraordinary humour, just in case you didn’t get it) .

Again, I don’t blame anyone for not getting my wicked humour. I just think it’s so funny when people think I’m depressed or mad at something what I’m actually just trying to be being funny. And then I start feeling depressed because I start thinking it’s not me who should be laughing, but my readers.

Here comes the part about this post I don’t like, because it feels like bragging and I don’t really feel comfortable bragging. However, in this world of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton where it’s sometimes perceived as being a good thing to be really stupid (and be proud of it too) I think it can’t really be a bad thing to brag about being not so stupid. So, what I’m trying to say is, I am awesome. I’ve studied English, Pedagogy, Physics and the Law at university, and Astrophysics and Evolutionary Biology in private, I’ve travelled 12 countries on three continents, and I have a certified IQ of 138, so if you ever read something on my blog that strikes you as weird or strange or even insane, chances are… I’m just being funny. And if you’re not sure if I’m depressed or mad at something… trust me, if I’m really mad or really depressed you will know, no matter how old you are or how much (or little) humour you’ve got.

RANT ENDS HERE

In other news, that friend I mentioned up there, the teacher, we met up yesterday and he gave me a belated birthday present. It’s a CD of German bands singing their songs in Japanese. I have no idea who came up with the idea of publishing such a CD or why, but it sure is funny. I’d like to share one of the songs with you. It’s from Die Ärzte, the best band in the world (self proclaimed, but I tend to agree with them). It’s a punk rock band that’s been around for ages. They were also the first band I ever saw in concert when I was 17, and I went to that concert together with a boy I was madly in love with at the time, but that’s an entirely different story (though with a happy ending). So anyway, the song is called Kujira wo sukue (Save The Whales).

I’d also like to recommend to you the song Junge (Boy) by that same band. Awesome song, but be careful about the video, it’s got zombies and blood in it, so don’t blame me for any nightmares you end up getting. Personally I think it’s funny rather than scary, but then that’s probably just my sense of humour again.

EDIT:

And in other, far more important news, it looks like Johnny has finally thought of something for Shoon to do. Check Irea’s blog for details.
