Yay! Britain’s Got Talent is back for a new season, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I was looking forward to this day as if it were Easter. I like that show because it gives people a shot at fame (albeit most certainly short lived but still fame) and at making them happy and achieve their dream at least for a short while. That kind of thing didn’t happen when I was a kid. The world has, at least in this respect, become a better place.

The last series was a feast for me, with 2 of the 3 finalists being teenage boys, one of whom, George Sampson, ending up as the winner. Now something like that is probably not going to happen again, at least not this year. Then again, you can never know. So yeah, I was watching this, waiting for some great, talented, entertaining acts to… well, entertain me, and I wasn’t diappointed. There were quite a few acts in this first episode of the new series that I liked, and most of them didn’t even involve any boys. Some of them did though. But there were also a lot of acts that were just… appalling.

The question is: should fat chubby people dance? Well, if they enjoy it and they’re doing it in the privacy of their own home, why not? But should they dance in front of an audience? And should they, on top of that, do it topless? Well… here’s Stavros Flatley for you…

Okay, that was definitely absolutely hilarious. And I mean that in the best way possible. When Demetrios Demetriou (40) and his son Lagi (12) entered the stage I didn’t really want them to take their clothes off and dance, but once they got going I was totally stunned. I certainly didn’t expect them to be that entertaining and that good. But if there’s one thing I like then it’s being surprised by people I don’t expect much of. Well done, guys, that was great. I loved it.

There were more good acts in this first episode. One that I liked a lot was Susan Boyle from West Lothian in Scotland, a female Paul Potts if you will. I’m totally not into 48-year-old not really very pretty women with unkempt hair and bushy eyebrows, but once she started singing I loved her. And that’s not only because she sang a song from Les Misérables, which still is my favourite musical. But I have seen that musical 5 or 6 times, and I don’t think I was ever so moved by I Dreamed a Dream before as I was tonight. Just great.

There was another act that I liked quite a lot. They’re called The Trapp Family Good Evans, consisting of mum Estelle, and dad Giles Evans, son Elliot (13) and two little girls (Georgia and Olivia, aged 7 and 6). They sang the Jackson Five classic I’ll Be There, and what can I say, I totally agree with Simon Cowell‘s comments afterwards…

Seriously, when Elliot started singing I had all my body hair stand on end. I wasn’t quite as impressed with the rest of the family, but Elliot was absolutely amazing.

To sum it all up, that was a great 1st episode of the new Britain’s Got Talent, and I’m looking forward to next week.
