Live long and prosper

The new Star Trek movie could have gone wrong in so many different ways. Surprisingly, it didn’t.

I grew up with the original Star Wars trilogy, and I was a huge fan. Whe I first saw the trailer for Episode 1 a couple of months before its release in early 1999 I was thrilled and excited, and, in fact, almost moved to tears. I never thought a prequel trilogy would happen, yet there it was.

Well, what can I say, my excitement didn’t last long. The Star Wars prequel trilogy pretty much sucked, and I guess that’s probably why I’m ultimately more of a Trekker than a Warrior.

Anyhow, having learned from all that I was less than excited when I heard about the new Star Trek movie, a prequel telling the story of how Kirk and Spock (and, in fact, the rest of the crew from the original series) got to know each other. I wasn’t really planning on seeing it. I loved the original series, and I just didn’t want this movie do to me what the Star Wars prequel trilogy had done. But then I read the reviews, and most of them sounded surprisingly good, so I gave this movie a shot after all.

So awesome.

Honestly, this film had me on the edge of my seat for two hours, and I loved every second of it. All the actors of the important roles, Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, Chekov, Sulu, Uhura, they all lived up to their antecessors. The worst thing would have been to see this movie and constantly roll your eyes and think “This isn’t Spock!” or “This isn’t Kirk!”. But they were. And they were great.

If you were a fan of the original Star Trek series this film is a must-see, and you won’t be disappointed. Kudos to J J Abrams for reviving the Star Trek franchise, which, after Nemesis, was pretty much dead. But the Trek is back, and here’s hoping for at least one or two more.

And if you’re wondering why I’m writing about it in this blog, as there aren’t really any boys in Star Trek… well, in this prequel there are, albeit for only for 5 minutes or so.

Boy, I love those ears.
