So Music Station.

Loved it. LOVED it. Last week when it was announced that Tamori would take a week off for health reasons I was wondering how his co-host Takeuchi Yoshie would do all on her own. I was worrying that despite NYC boys it might become the most boring Music Station ever.

Ha! Japanese TV geniuses didn’t leave Ms Takeuchi on her own, nor did they didn’t have a stand in for Tamori, you know, some awesome comedian who will work for food and who’s available on short notice. Instead they had all the guests interview other guests. Ueto Aya interviewed NYC boys, NYC boys interviewed Kobukuro and so on.

Did I already mention the word “genius”?

Ueto Aya was the first to interview someone, and she was obviously a wee bit nervous. And slow. And cute as ever. Heaven knows I love her, I always have. When I grow up I will marry her.

Awesome.

For months I’ve been wondering why I liked the yellow-with-black-and-white-stripes B.I.Shadow costumes so much, or what they reminded me of. Today while I was watching the DVD I finally remembered. That was totally my uniform as an usher at a theatre where I used to work many years ago. The worst thing about the job was that I had to sit through dozens and dozens of performances of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, just in case somebody in the audience fainted or had a seizure or gave birth or something. Surprisingly, none of these things ever happened. Or if they did I didn’t notice because of course I wasn’t watching the audience, I was watching Joseph. In a very neat and pretty yellow-black-and-white uniform. Me, not Joseph.  He was wearing a dreamcoat, remember?

Uh… where was I? Oh, right, I watched the DVD, both DVDs, today on my brother’s 50″ flatscreen TV. One thing’s for sure, I’m not gonna buy one of these until JE starts releasing their stuff on Blue Ray, because a regular DVD on a huge TV doesn’t look half as good as on my 17″ computer monitor.

Anyway, I watched both DVDs and I noticed many random things. Like, it’s amazing how many times Yuugo seems to have no idea where he is or what he’s doing. It’s very adorable, and for obvious reasons it reminds me of Keito. And that’s also why I’m not worried about Yuugo at all. Have another look at him in two years. He’ll be fine. But it made me wonder why they would pick him for this debut, and not somebody like Yoshino Shouta. I mean, it was an audition, and the prize wasn’t a CD debut, it was being a regular in a TV variety show. So they could have just left him there and have Yoshino, who is already such a professional, debut. Two reasons why they didn’t do that.

  1. They already had someone who can’t sing.
  2. They needed a dork.

Every unit must have a dork, someone who’s a bit slow, maybe because he’s new to all this, and someone who will most likely mess up a lot. People love that. A groups with 5 professionals who never make any mistakes, who never forget their lines or their dance steps, who are just perfect in every single way would be the most boring group in the whole universe. Imperfection has always been an essential part of perfection. Every group needs a dork. In Ya-Ya-yah it was Taiyo, in Hey!Say!JUMP it’s Keito, in B.I.Shadow it’s Yuugo. Bless them all.

Btw, speaking of Yoshino Shouta, I spotted him in the NYC Making. He’s wearing pink.

So anyway, yeah, every group needs variety. But every groups needs chemistry too. Handling 10 different personalities and making it work for the fans is incredibly difficult, and I think Johnny might already regret the decision to debut a 10-member-group, even though surprisingly nobody dropped out yet.

Now there’s NYwBIS, and they’re catering for the same target audience as Hey!Say!JUMP. If there was a HSJ concert and a NYwBIS concert at the same time and I could see only one I have no idea right now which one I’d pick.

It’s gonna be very interesting to see how all this works out in the next couple of months.
