You see, ever so often it happens that I watch a Johnny’s video and I notice a little detail, maybe a funny face, maybe a messed up dance step, and I’m thinking “remember to mention that when you write about that video“. And then I write my post, try to come up with a couple of witty remarks, publish it, read it and notice that I forgot to mention that detail. I hardly ever go back and edit my posts though, and so many of these little details get lost. Nothing to cry about, it’s just what happens, and life goes on.
However, sometimes there are little things that I just can’t get out of my mind, and I’m kinda glad that today is a slow news day so I actually have the time to mention it.
This is about Yugo on Shonen Club this month. He was a bit of a mess in both episodes, but they were both recorded on the same day so that’s not much of a surprise.
In the In the September 6 episode B.I.Shadow performed Lalalila, and at the very end of the song Yugo was once again completely lost. He looked what the other members were doing, and he tried to keep up with them, but he completely failed, and you can actually see how he goes “D’oh!”. Click on the thumbnail for an animated gif image (not dial-up friendly, opens in new window) of his face in close up.
The whole thing looks even worse when you see Nakaken next to him, who actually knows what he’s doing and is bursting with confidence. While Yugo’s body language says “Damn, I suck!”, Nakaken’s body language says “Man, I’m pretty cool!”. Click here.
I know it’s kinda cruel to scrutinize a boy like that, but it’s not like I’m pointing my finger at him, saying “Haha, look how stupid he is!”. No, I’m pointing my finger at him, saying “Look how angry he is at himself for messing up.”
And that’s a good thing.
Yugo cares about what he’s doing. He knows that he still has a lot to learn, and he’s trying hard. It’s quite understandable that he’s angry at himself, it’s a perfectly natural reaction. However, people learn from their mistakes. At least that’s the theory. Some people keep making the same mistakes over and over again and never learn anything. But not Yugo. You can see in his face that he wants to learn, and he will learn. It may take him longer than others, but he’ll get there. I have no doubts about that. And I absolutely enjoy watching him in that process. There’s hardly anything that I enjoy more than watching young people learn grow, and I don’t mean grow in size but grow as a person, as an artist or as whatever else it is that they choose to do.
Sadly most of Yugo’s growth (and everybody else’s too) his happening behind closed doors, impossible for us to see. That’s why I enjoy seeing people messing up on stage so much. Because the way they react to it gives us a small glimpse into their personality. Management want us to see pretty boys and perfect performances. But these are human beings, they make mistakes, and not only do they learn from their mistakes (hopefully), but so do we because when we watch them make mistakes we learn something about their personality that we were not supposed to see at that particular moment. And it’s very interesting to see how everybody deals with their own mistakes in a different way. Hikaru forgets his lyrics and laughs. Yamapi falls over his own feet and look looks humiliated, and as you just saw Yugo messes up his dance steps and gets angry at himself.
Shit happens, and life goes on. So don’t you worry, Yugo. You’ll be fine.
