So, the reason I didn’t write anything about my family Christmas is that I pretty much don’t remember anything of it, which I think might be a good thing. I do remember that the food was good though, and that everybody seemed to have a good time. But maybe one shouldn’t start discussing politics with one’s brother over three bottles of Chianti. Oh well.
Anyway, one good thing about this year’s Christmas was that I broke with the century-old tradition of geving my niece and nephew money for Christmas. If you ask them what they want for Christmas they always want money, and for a while it was okay because it saved me the hassle of picking and buying presents. But this year I didn’t feel like giving money, so I decided to give them something a lot more valuable: books.
My niece is 16, and wants to study to become a vet, so I gave her The Ancestor’s Tale: A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Evolution by Richard Dawkins. At first she was a bit freaked out because it has 900+ pages, but then she started reading it right away. My nephew is 12, and he doesn’t want to become anything because he still doesn’t know a whole lot about life, the universe and everything, so I gave him George’s Secret Key to the Universe
by Stephen and Lucy Hawking. He’ll probably never read it, but if he wants to at least he can.
And that’s Christmas for this year. I don’t want to see or hear anything christmassy again until September.
In other news, I had a funny dream last night. I dreamt of Chinen. I think I’ve never dreamt of Chinen before. He was very tiny and very cute. We were at a mobile phone shop together. Well, actually it was not a real shop, just a booth that was set up in an underground station. They had a special offer that got me interested, an exciting new service, but I wasn’t sure if my phone was advanced enough for it. So I took my phone out of my pocket, and that was embarrassing because people could see that my mobile phone was made of Lego®. But anyway, I wanted to check if my phone worked, so I tried calling Chinen who stood right next to me. He kept telling me his number that started with 1-7-1, and I was too stupid to dial it. All the time I kept dialing 1-7-7 and 7-1-1 and I had to start over again and again. But Chinen was very patient and kept telling me 1-7-1… with the most adorable smile on his face…
I think we spoke English. But I never finished dialing that number. =/
